A Review of Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell" - Entertainment - Music

What the Hell is the initial song released from Avrils 2011 album titled Goodbye Lullaby. The song was first heard by fans on January 11th 2011.

The single kicks off with a nice and funky keyboard riff in advance of when Avril opens with the words You say Im messing with your head at the same time a bevy of cheerleaders help Avril out with yeah, yeahs. The song begins to become catchy at the pre-chorus and then crashes into the chorus that has more hooks than a coat rack. The two part chorus showcases comparably catchy vocal melodies, but then heads back into the cheerleaderish verse with even more yeah, yeahs. Avril definitely is in love with her cheerleader backups, reminiscent of her Girlfriend track from a few years ago.

'All I want is to mess around,' the message of the song gets right to the point. Avril doesnt give a damn, about anything apparently. She doesnt care 'if you mess around, if you love me, if you hate me.' Life is a big bowl of what the hell for Avril. I envy this way of looking at things. Which of us hasnt wanted to throw up our hands in disgust and say screw it, or what the hell? I know I have, and this release demands it of me.

About 2:30 minutes into the track the bridge appears out of nowhere which contains a lot of woahs and Avril letting everyone know shes messing with your head. I guess that could mean almost anything. The record then kind of obviously shifts back into the chorus for the next two trips around the hook.

Above all, its a fantastic track. The pre-teens will latch on to the rebellion in the record and maybe kids up to college aged will enjoy the beat and the sugary goodness of the shimmering guitars.Delight in this recording and watch out for the full album in March of 2011 called Goodbye Lullaby. If it's anything like "What the Hell" it will be a rocker.
